We quickly realized that we wanted to create a remote control vastly different from the current market offerings, offering a more intuitive and user-friendly experience, while taking a step away from the traditional rectangular flat remote style, with lots of buttons or simple smartphone apss. We aimed to develop a remote that was not only functional and easy to understand but also engaging and enjoyable to use.
To achieve this, we began by defining the core functionalities an RGB remote should provide, ensuring users could seamlessly control their lighting. These essential features included:
- Turn the light on and off
- Adjust brightness levels
- Selecting a desired color
Adding onto this we defined additional requirements allowing for a better experience
- A secure wall mount to ensure the remote is always within reach and never misplaced
- Portability, allowing users to control their lighting from anywhere in the room
- An intuitive interface for adjusting both color and brightness
Through multiple iterations, we refined our product step by step, incorporating valuable feedback from our professor at each stage. This iterative process allowed us to continuously improve both functionality and design. The 3D model showcased above was created using Blender, serving as a detailed visualization of our final concept.
Key features of the remote control

- Power Button: Turns the light on and off, also indicating the current color.
- Brightness Control Marble: A marble to dim the brightness.
- Color Selection Dial: A rotary dial to choose the desired color indicated by the rgb ring.
- Wall Mount: Functions as both a holder and a charging station.
Design Philosophy: Integral Design
Our remote control features a cylindrical shape, embodying an integral design that is both recognizable and geometric. This design choice was made for several reasons:
- Compactness: Usable both in hand as on the wall
- Simplicity: The reduced and simple design ensures a stable and visually appealing form.
- High Quality and Durability: Essential for our target audience.
Wall Mount
The wall mount contrasts with the round form of the remote control by being square-shaped. It is designed to be practical and understated, ensuring that the remote control remains the focal point. It serves as charger and a place to keep the remote from getting lost in the room.
Orientation
- Clear Orientation: The top and bottom of the remote are clearly defined and seperated, by the visual and haptic difference.
- No Left/Right Ambiguity: While top and bottom are clearly defined there is no such thing on how you rotate the upper part. With left/ right hand use in mind you can freely rotate the remote in hand.
Precision
The remote has two different inputs for color and brightness. While the brighness has a large-radius dial for high resolution color control, the brightness is controlled with a marble that moves within an 180° arc, as it doesnt need as much precision as the color and a 360° turn would not make much sense for a brightness control.
Context and Associations
The remote control fits into a modern context with clear forms and technical elements like the LED strip, without being overly complex. The playful marble and the high-quality materials (matte plastic, brushed aluminum ring) contribute to its perceived value. The rotary dial, reminiscent of luxury products like sports cars and high-end stereo systems, adds a subconscious sense of quality.
Brightness Control with the Marble
The marble provides a clear indication of the system’s status and is easy to use, serving as a distinctive feature. Its large size makes it a focal point, and its placement at the bottom ensures that the minimum brightness level is easily accessible. The half-circle design is ergonomic, allowing for single-handed use and clear min/max settings.
Conclusion
Our RGB remote control is designed to meet the needs of modern, quality-conscious users who appreciate both technology and aesthetics. With its intuitive controls, high-quality materials, and thoughtful design, it is a perfect addition to any sophisticated living space.
This was a very fun group product design project with the goal of creating an RGB light remote. We worked in a group of four, and I was mostly responsible for the animation for the presentation of the remote.’
